Our Story

Skin City was founded by the present owner, Brigitta Melendy, in July 1995. The business location has always been at 323 Divisadero Street in the heart of San Francisco. Through the continued service-oriented efforts of the staff, the salon maintains a client base of several hundred regulars– some of whom have been clients since opening in 1995! Many of these loyal clients are now also considered friends.

Skin City is known not only as a skin care salon, but also as a neighborhood supporter of various community events. It is a way of giving back to a community that has allowed the salon to flourish.

Brigitta Melendy, owner and esthetician

Hours: Wednesday 3-7, Thursday 3-7, Friday 1-4:30, Saturday 10-4:30

Brigitta, a native San Franciscan, is a lifelong enthusiast of living her best life. An esthetician since 1993, she discovered her desire to be self-employed soon after receiving her state license.  Ms. Melendy developed a passion for wellness and furthered her education of cosmetic ingredients, its applications and holistic health practices.  To achieve the best results in skincare, she developed her own skin care line, known as Bright Blends.  After 2 decades of running Skin City and providing quality skincare, she realized there was more she could offer.

Since the founding of Skin City in 1995, her focus has evolved beyond skin care to becoming an advocate for the underserved by supporting local childcare centers, children’s schools, and battered women’s shelters.  Her latest partnership with the UCSF Gynecological Oncology Center, has afforded her the opportunity to provide pro bono services for patients undergoing cancer treatments.

As a public speaker, Brigitta has donated time to various organizations speaking about being a business owner. It’s her genuine desire to share her knowledge and expert resources with women wanting to start a business, grow their business or simply live their best lives. She has been recognized as a woman business leader who has achieved excellence in her professional and personal life.

Kimberly has been practicing the art of esthetics since 1996.  She began her skin care career at Skin City, expanding her knowledge and experience through apprenticing with Brigitta and continuing education classes through American Institute of Esthetics. The therapeutic nature of this work inspired her to broaden her skill set with a certification in reflexology and Reiki attunements (levels 1-3).

Kimberly’s professional journey in skin care and healing led her to opening/operating her own businesses for 12 years; happily returning “home” to Skin City in 2013.

After almost two decades in this industry she’s still fascinated by the exciting advances in skin care technologies and ingredients, and is inspired by the body and spirit’s natural healing abilities when given the nourishment it needs (nutritionally, energetically and spiritually).

When Kimberly’s not at Skin City she’s exploring, creating and participating in projects and activities that inspire and empower women to embrace the inherent beauty and wisdom that lies within.  Feminine sensual movement/pole dancing being one of her favorites!

Michelle Rothman, esthetician and makeup artist

Hours: Tuesday 12-7, Wednesday 11-6, Thursday 12-8, Friday 12-8, Saturday 10-5

Michelle Rothman, a California licensed esthetician, has been practicing for the last 3 1⁄2 years. She is thrilled to be be a part of Skin City, one of the longest-operating, female-owned businesses in her own community. She has over 10 years experience as a freelance makeup artist, and is fully trained in lash extensions.

While working at a spa, she realized how the importance of healthy skin and flawless makeup application go hand in hand. She encountered a client at the spa that had severe adult acne, and watched the woman go through a complete body and mind transformation, and knew she wanted to be part of something that was able to make people feel that way.

Michelle is a self proclaimed “Product Junkie”, and brings to the plate a firsthand knowledge of practicing what she preaches. When people ask her age, they are usually very surprised at the number she tells them. She replies with 4 simple words: CLEANSE, EXFOLIATE, NOURISH, AND PROTECT!

Michelle has an honest, compassionate, and passionate approach to all that she does, and her great sense of humor helps clients feel at ease while in some compromising positions. Her first and foremost goal is to make all of her clients feel good about their bodies, which to her is the best part of her job.
